How to Design Your First Custom Patch
Designing your first custom patch can feel daunting — there are so many choices: embroidered vs woven, size, shape, backing type. This guide walks you through everything you need to know to go from idea to finished product with confidence.
1. Start with a Clear Concept
Before opening any design software, sketch your idea on paper. Think about: What is the core image or logo? What text (if any) needs to be included? What mood or style are you going for — bold and graphic, or intricate and detailed?
Custom patches work best with simple, high-contrast designs. Embroidery has physical limits — very fine details and thin lines can get lost at smaller sizes. Aim for clean shapes with a limited colour palette (5–8 colours max for embroidery).
2. Choose the Right Patch Type
- Embroidered patches — the classic look, raised texture, great for logos and text. Best for designs with bold shapes and limited fine detail.
- Woven patches — finer detail than embroidered, thinner profile. Good for intricate designs with small text.
- PVC/rubber patches — waterproof and durable, 3D look. Great for tactical, outdoor, or novelty use.
- Chenille patches — soft and fluffy, the classic varsity letterman style. Perfect for sports teams.
3. Prepare Your Artwork
For the best results, submit your design as a vector file(SVG, AI, or EPS). Vectors scale perfectly to any size without losing quality. If you only have a raster image (PNG or JPG), make sure it's at least 300 DPI at the final patch size.
Our online Designer Tool lets you create your design right in the browser — no software needed. You can add text, shapes, and upload your own artwork.
4. Choose Your Size and Shape
Common patch sizes range from 2" to 5" across. The right size depends on where the patch will be worn. A chest patch on a jacket can be 4"–5", while a cap patch is typically 2"–3". Standard shapes include circle, rectangle, and shield — custom die-cut shapes are also available for unique designs.
5. Select Your Backing
- Iron-on — heat-activated adhesive. Quick and easy for most fabrics.
- Sew-on — most durable, recommended for heavy-use items.
- Velcro (hook & loop) — ideal for tactical, uniform, or interchangeable patches.
- Self-adhesive — peel and stick, best for temporary applications.
